I'm not sure I agree that this is "unfortunate" for Marchan. Yes, he loses some development time (assuming that he would have been able to play during this time); on the other hand, his salary jumps from $114,100 to $700,000.
Interesting commentary on the current management regime, IMHO. They just chose to incur an additional salary cost of up to a half-million dollars (depending on how long Marchan actually stays on the 60-day injured list), plus the CBT penalty associated with that, to avoid having to DFA a backup catcher or relief pitcher.
