I doubt that Norwood was ready to start the season. He certainly doesn't seem to have pitched enough to be ready. It may be possible that he can qualify for the 10 day IL if they solve the 40 man roster space without moving him off the 40. I would like to see if he has anything that can help the bullpen. We know from past experience that someone in the group of 15 pitchers is likely to go to the IL in the first two weeks of the season.

And unlike past GMs, DD and the current GM might just be able to make another deal or two in the coming days.

IL is 15 days again. But 40 is the real issue. Restricted list loophole certainly seems possible, even if it's just for a few days.

What's kind of a pleasant surprise is that they actually have five starters ready (albeit limited).

Actually, according to this tweet from Mark Feinsand, there is a 10-day IL for pitchers until May 1st. Then it changes to the 15-day IL requirement.

Ah, that makes sense. The 40 problem will obviously be solved one way or another. Still think some guys who never got optioned last year will end up getting optioned along the way.

If Norwood goes on the restricted list, does that open up a 40-man spot for Stott? If not, I am guessing McArthur or Stubbs gets a DFA.

Perhaps he meant Sands. He would probably be tradeable (even if also DFA'ed).

They obviously don't want to do this until they see how everyone plays but in the best-case scenario both Camargo and Herrera become redundant (though the former still has upside/years of control).

Can they DFA Herrera while he is injured? That's the move I would make. He has some value to the Phillies (as depth and they've already been through the worst of PR stuff) and I'm not sure anyone claims him even at 1.75 mil this year.

I think we need to see what Moniak will do before we talk about Herrera. Hopefully he comes back in 3-4 weeks but then he'll need a full rehab in LHV because he missed all of Spring Training. So we are talking late May. If Moniak is doing great at that point and Herrera only looks so-so in his rehab they could always waive Herrera. No reason to think about it while he is on the IL.

In hindsight we should have not put MacArthur and Ortiz on the 40-man list since the rule 5 draft was cancelled. Those moves were justified back in November, but obviously it is costing the team in-season maneuvering room now.

I would normally say no but seem to recall someone being DFA'ed while injured. Or maybe that was just outrighted.

I don't think they are really ready to do that though. Flawed as he is, he's still a more proven quantity than either of our current CFs. And just has more value than a bottom-of-the-roster pitcher or back-up AAA catcher (especially since they already have another one of those, though they need Marchan back first).

I also think he can reject the AAA assignment if he did clear. But you're not wrong that he might not get claimed or even be eagerly welcome as a free agent.

Stott walks in the 2nd and Moniak follows with a homerun. It scares me that Moniak hasn't walked once in ST, but I guess it doesn't matter if you are going to hit bombs.

McArthur or Stubbs gets a DFA

We should continue to protect McArthur. He pitches well last season and would surely be claimed, as he is cheap and only 25-years-old this season.

Most (if not all) teams have 40-man issues at this point. Often when we fret about these things the player ends up staying. They lost Lopez earlier and he's already been DFA'ed and reclaimed. Kept Moss. Lost Medina.

The catcher thing really doesn't make sense. Stubbs made the team because he has more experience and Marchan was never in the mix because they want him to play everyday. I guess that also means they'd rather call up Sands than Marchan if Stubbs gets hurt or falters. But Sands doesn't seem like someone they can develop long-term, they'll ultimately want to move O'Hoppe up to AAA if a spot opens there too.

Ranger looking really good through 3. Has good separation between his fastball and curve/change. Hitting the corners for the most part. Low 90s velocity is free and easy.

And Bryce went deep for the 2nd time. 8-0.
