Did not see the play yesterday, but I have always liked Charlie Montoyo as a manager and is worthy of consideration in the future if Thomson does not work out. Liked him with the Durham Bulls and Tampa Bay. Don’t know anything about this situation, but just my two cents.

Charlie Montoyo was a Phillies pharmhand at one point in the '90's. He had quite a fan following on the old Hank Davis Phillies Listserv. Montoyo walked quite alot but didn't do much else, if I recall. He was a poor man's Dave Hollins, in that regard.

If Thomson does not work out here the Jays should hire baseball's only Canadian manager.

Honestly don't remember Montoyo from the listserv either!

It seems like the losing streak led to the firing more than anything that happened yesterday. And, possibly, that Toronto waited until today because nobody cares about baseball in Canada today (NHL free agency).

Several other Royals have been mentioned as possible Phillies targets (Merrifield, Michael A. Taylor, Brad Keller). I suppose it could depress their trade value to AL teams.

MLB also made an additional concession as part of the deal, per court filings Friday: it will change minor-league contracts moving forward. The uniform player contract previously forbid teams from paying minor leaguers outside of the regular season. That restriction will be eliminated.

Rosenthal argue his trade value will be lower if they wait until the off-season but I'm not sure that's really the case. New team only gets him for 2 years instead of 2 1/2 but there'd be more buyers and more available assets. Unless the only buyers are teams that also want to at least try to extend him.

Not gonna feel bad for the Nats especially since they won a World Series but that is a lot of wasted non-competitive seasons with a player that young and good on your roster. Of course the Phillies' three years after last making the playoffs were worse because they didn't have anyone young or good (except Hamels).

That offer from the Nats is mediocre. There is no way that Soto should not be in the $35-$38 million AAV range if comps to other players are considered. He has no more inexpensive pre-arbitration years to fold in. He is younger than Harper was at the time of his deal and the market has gotten more expensive since then.

Kind of sad to see a team make an offer designed to give them better PR if they do in fact trade him.
