I never saw a scouting report which described the pre-draft Moniak as a slap-hitter. That's how Quinn was described.

All I'm seeing is that we drafted a really fast guy who's Dad was a good player. Nobody gave him hitting prowess attributes like those for Druw Jones, Johnson or Collier and others.

Excerpt from MLB on McFarlane:

He’s gotten some opportunities to start since 2020, including this spring, but has spent the bulk of his college career coming out of the Hurricanes bullpen. A right-hander who has added good strength to his athletic 6-foot-4 frame since heading to college, McFarlane succeeds largely with two very good pitches: his fastball and slider. His fastball has averaged over 95 mph this season, topping out at 99, and there’s good run on the pitch. His slider, which he’s run up to 89-90 mph, flashes plus and misses bats at a very impressive rate. He does have some feel for his mid-80s changeup as well. With that kind of potential in a three-pitch mix and an ideal durable pitcher’s frame, it might be tempting to give McFarlane another chance to start at the next level.

Winkleman thinks the Phils would have had to punt the rest of the draft to sign Collier:

There will be a lot of what-ifs with Cam Collier going a pick later and it is certainly similar to last year with Kahlil Watson. The Reds have 3 more picks than the Phillies, I don't know if the Phillies could sign Collier without punting the rest of their draft.

The reds have 10.7M to spend. The Phillies have 6.6M.

That's what I assumed. It also shows that losing a draft pick is not the only penalty (and maybe not even the most severe) for signing a comp player. Guess we won't have to worry about that in the future though.

exactly. They would have had 1.6M to spread over 18 other picks. Less than 100K per pick.

It also looks from the last 2 picks that we really want to squeeze out some dollars for later picks. We'll want at least a couple of picks beyond round 10 that can get $200K-$300K and Collier might have precluded that. 3rd round pick looks a little below slot and I can't imagine the 4th round pick being above (though he does seem an interesting college pick with some rare projectibility more on secondary pitches coming through than most college picks at that point in the draft.

I legit don't get how the Reds are going to sign guys. They've drafted 10 guys in the MLB.com top 250 and not a single college senior. And everybody assumes they had to go overslot on Collier

The Phillies final selection of Day 2 is Catcher, Gustavo Sosa.

I can confidently say that they saved a boatload on under-slots today. Should prime them for a big day of over-slotting tomorrow.

Some big prep names still on the board like Gavin Turley and Tristan Smith.

Initial scan of first 10 rounds shows 83% college picks, which would be the highest rate (81% in 2019) since at least 1992

The whole industry is going college. Phillies with 2 HS picks are above average.

That would seem to also correlate with the reduction in minor league teams/rosters. They're happy to outsource some development and a lot of risk?

Cutting a short season level makes it tougher to develop non-first round HS talent. The first rounders can skip to Low A in their first full season. Below that they might need a couple of years at FCL (like our HS LHP) and there are a limited number of roster spots.

Hopefully the Phillies have enough money for 1 or 2 more HS tomorrow, but they could easily go college or JC overslot in round 11 too.

How about the Braves draft so far. no wonder why they are always winning. Try not to compare it with the Phils draft. Awesome for the Braves fans, brutal for the Phils fans. here's hoping that the Phils new Sosa is an all star.

It helps to trade for draft picks and to not sign players that cost compensation picks. The Phillies definitely have always needed more of a long term growth philosophy rather than trying to add that final piece every year to win. This dates back 20-30 years when they refused to go over suggested slots and compete for top Latin American talent when doing so would have cost a fraction of whatever major league budget decision they were making.

The new rules of slots and pools and various limits help the Phillies by leveling the playing field and reducing their worst tendencies (not being cheap, but always planning for the short term as opposed to the long term).

The Braves traded 2 prospects in their top 5 for the 35th overall pick. And then they kinda reached both at 20 and 35. Not sure I understand their approach. The Mets and the Reds are doing great according to the rankings.

The Braves may be trying to build a large pool and then spread it around to a half dozen picks. As an organization they seem to be very good at building depth while still occasionally hitting on a star.

That is our weakness with one of the smaller pools. We had to go cheap on 4 picks yesterday instead of 2. Now we really need to have a couple of players we can sign for $200K-$400K that are worth it. We'll have a draft that goes 8 deep in potential prospects while the Braves will probably go 15 deep.
