Devin Williams is being placed on the 10-day IL with a fractured right hand. He told us he had too much to drink after Sunday’s celebration, got upset about something and punched a wall with his pitching hand. He will need surgery.

AL Wild Card race has been pretty wild of late. Yankees are 2 games up and look to have the first spot all but wrapped up. But then Boston and Seattle are tied at 89-70 and the Blue Jays are one back. Yankees have the toughest series (home against Tampa). Toronto and Seattle have home series where they should be favored vs Baltimore and the Angels respectively. Red Sox play at the Nats.

Seattle has won 10 of 11. Jared Kelenic has been red hot even though he is still hitting .177 (1000+ OPS last 15 days). JP Crawford has been steady and could end up as one of the better players on a playoff team.

I'm pulling hard for the Mariners because A) they are my local and B) no love for the Red Sox and C) it would give the Phillies MLB's longest playoff drought.

Have heard Max Scherzer would like to pitch into his 40s. So that would mean a 3-year-plus deal. At 37, remarkably, he’s still at the top of his game, so a record annual salary is all but assured.

Kershaw shut down for the rest of the year-“forearm tightness” once again. It sounds like he needs surgery. Being at the end of his contract and at his age, he may be finished.

Imagine if the Phillies had just gone full luxury tax and signed George Springer (grand slam today) and JT (but no Didi). They probably could have won with Galvis, and a LF platoon instead of another pricey FA for 2022.

Mariners showing up today against the Angels like the Phillies did against the Pirates last weekend. Looks like they will continue to hold MLB's longest non-playoff streak instead of us.

This thread is about gambling, but it's well-put in general. The only thing I can't figure out is what they do if they stop creating new fans.

It's important to remember that Major League Baseball's model is not to grow the fan base. That's inefficient. It's to grow revenue, which is a different thing. The best way, they are finding, to grow revenue, is to exploit the fan base.

Unfortunately, baseball (major and minors) has become all about money and how to make more. My local minor league team (in my opinion) is going downhill fast. This started before MLB took over, but has only bloomed with MLB sticking their finger in everything. We are a small town team and the team did well compared to many of their Carolina League colleagues. New ownership started the downfall as I see them positioning themselves to relocate. With the new ownership and MLB now in play there is less of a community feel and less promoting themselves in the community to build a fan base. It is clear that it is all about making money and less about love of baseball. I could go on, but felt an opening to gripe about minor leagues. Love of baseball gets fostered in our interaction with team and its fans. If you can't afford to go to the minors that is a problem. They don't seem to care. Seeing the same team repeatedly does not make me want to renew my season tickets. I will for one more year, but I am on the edge about long-term. However if I give up on my local team, that will be an excuse for the owners to move it. anyway I should get back to work...
