Well, we're certainly going to find out what Jimmy wants. If it's the most money and security he's staying. If he wants to be The Man, neither Philly nor the Lakers really work. But if he really wants to be with LeBron, who knows what he'll take and what else the Lakers might do.

Interesting. When originally reported the info was that if Lakers waited until after June 30 they could sign another max deal (per paragraph 3 of attached LA Times story).

I enjoy trying to understand the financial and salary cap aspects of pro sports, but the way the NBA is structured it is essentially unfathomable to me.

I'm wondering, with the 76ers holding the 24th pick, there doesn't seem to be a chance any serious talent falls there. If they bring Butler, Harris and Redick back, they are going to have to frugally put together a bench. The have Smith and Bolden for sure, but no one else is sure to be back. They may not want a guaranteed 1st round contract, maybe they trade down for a couple more early second rounders, the Nets don't have a first round pick, but have the first pick of the 2nd round, maybe trade 24 for that pick and future pick(s). There doesn't look like there will be a huge talent drop between 24 and the mid thirties.

My experience is if an organization has to keep repeating a certain someone is "in charge", they are hiding something.

I definitely believe Brand is the guy the 76ers want out front and to be the face of management, but I doubt he has final say or the "firm hold on the reins" that they claim.

This is a guy who had zero GM experience, but was known and liked by 76ers fans & media. Perfect front man formula after the disaster of Brian & Jerry C.

I trust Harris and the rest of 76ers ownership as far as I can throw them.

I don't see what there is to hide really though. It's all there in the piece: that they failed to hire more qualified candidates, that Brand didn't really understand contractual stuff (hardly the only GM who needs a specialist there) what the other people do or don't do.

Honestly, I don't even recall people suggesting Alex Rucker was running the team, and it's also not surprising that the inherited Assistant GMs were important. MIght have been nice to clean house but hard to do if you don't have a GM to pick new assistants!

Seems to me the premise is not false: Brand made those deals, right or wrong, and this will be his off-season of failure or success. That much was botched before him is obviously on ownership.

Scariest part of that story is that Colangelo’s right hand man is now Brand’s right hand man...Colangelo could not have been a bigger disaster for the Sixers during his time, I’d prefer all his cronies get purged.

And Klentak kept the interim GM who was Amaro's top assistant. I don't think there is any reason to believe a guy who spent 12 years in the NBA office, even if there was cronyism, isn't good at cap stuff. But as Brand settles in, I imagine there will be more changes (as with the medical team).

Well no, that's what I mean. Hayes didn't place the piece, the team did. To hear Hayes tell it, there were in fact burning questions, and he, the great Sixers insider, was able to get to the bottom of it after two months of hanging around the team. A "placed" piece means the Sixers brass encouraged him to pursue this narrative, whether directly or indirectly. Gave him a "scoop" about the medical brass, and nearly everything else in the story isn't really news (or the product of serious digging), it's literally just what the front office says is the case.

It's not that big a deal, these things happen all the time, teams curry reporters for coverage and reporters curry the teams for access and scoops. But clearly the team wanted this message out there. Probably more for agents and players than to fans or WIP hosts.

I would also consider trading 24 for more 2nd round picks
