The Phillies didn't option Franco until August 4 so that was just poor planning. But they are happy with Rodriguez. They also chose Miller over Haseley when Bruce came back, but obviously things change.
Listen, I agree that "making a run" at the wild card is not that exciting, but I don't think you start playing for next year. I would rather see a meaningful series against the Mets on August 29th then wonder what the next two weeks might mean for Adam Haseley's development.
Where people might disagree is whether a AAAA guy with a platoon advantage and less defense helps us win more than Haseley. But you could also question whether the (admittedly hot) Quinn is better than Haseley in CF.
We're going to have this same question about the rotation if Arrieta decides to shut it down (though I would think he would have been asked to make that decision by now if he was going to). Bring back one of the failed starters from this year, take another look at one of the AAA guys or just give it it to Strailey? For that matter why are we even starting Smyly if we're playing for next year? But we're not.
