Blue Jays fans are understandably upset. I think he probably should have gone in as a Jay, regardless of what he'd said in public. I wonder if this is because his kids feel closer to the Phillies than Toronto.

To me it's a no-brainer that Roy would go in as a Blue Jay but the fans should probably direct their anger at the Blue Jays organization. No reason he should have ever been traded, and if he'd made the postseason even once in Toronto maybe his short stay in Philadelphia wouldn't carry so much weight.

I'm sure someone is already writing about this but I can't help but wonder - would have have been first-ballot alive?

It does appear that he--and his family--bonded with Philadelphia and the Phillies organization in a way they didn't with Toronto or the Blue Jays organization. When he passed, his memorial service was at the Phillies, not the Blue Jays, spring training park despite the fact that he actually lived in Dunedin where the Blue Jays' park was. I think that said something about where he and his family felt his baseball "home" was.

The bond with the Phillies was clearly special. But in reality, for me, in terms of what he actually achieved, he ranks behind Hamels, Moyer and Lee as the signature pitchers of the 2007-2011 era (and by 2012 both he and the team were on their way to being done).
