Hand surgery for embiid...could miss the rest of January and more. I guess this is why we have Horford.

He will be re-evaluated following surgery in 1-2 weeks. Gotta figure there's 10 days to 2 weeks of rehab once he's cleared.

They're coming around. I think a lot of good can come of it. guys stepping up, filling different roles. And hopefully Joel sits fewer games in Feb/March as a result.

Of course this could easily become fodder for "keep one star or the other" camp going forward.

So long as they keep that second seed in reach I think they can make a run. They continue to pass most of the big head-to-head tests.

Embiid will have to maintain his conditioning while he recovers. No reason you can't really work out your lower body if your hand is in a cast...

I'm not one to assume the worst about him but it is surely a concern! He could do even more conditioning. But he could also sit on the couch and eat badly.

It is his responsibility not to do that, of course, but if I were the Sixers I'd have a 24/7 trainer with him for the next few weeks.

The Sixers will be without Embiid for at least a couple of weeks, and likely somewhere more in the neighborhood of six to eight, judging by the case histories of NBA players who have previously torn ligaments in their non-shooting hands.

Maybe this is a good thing in a way...this team is still talented enough to win a good amount of their games and perhaps help some players figure out their roles. Sixers seem to be in the market for a shooter with one of the rumors being our old friend Robert Covington or an even older friend...iggy.

Could Sixers have a reunion with Covington or Iguodala?

He's basing that on other NBA guys who have missed 40 days or so. Could be four weeks, could be eight. For a civilian it can apparently be 12. No way to know for sure until the healing process starts. I assume you're recovering from the surgery itself as much as the injury too.

For sure this can be good for the Sixers in some ways, but any scenario where they lose ground on a higher seed is bad. Though I suppose, counterpoint, if they are forced to play the Bucks in the second round instead of the conference final Embiid and Horford might be sharper.

Which is exactly what the Ringer article that is the source of the Covington rumor says.

The Sixers have expressed interest in a long list of wings, including Malik Beasley (Nuggets), Glenn Robinson III (Warriors), Davis Bertans (Wizards), E’Twaun Moore (Pelicans), and Andre Iguodala (Grizzlies), according to multiple league sources. Most interestingly, sources say the Sixers inquired about Robert Covington, whom they dealt to the Timberwolves in 2018 in the Butler trade. I reported last month that Covington is available, and that is still the case. But Minnesota could have so many bidders for Covington that the price will be too high for Philadelphia to make a reunion a reality.

Something Isn’t Quite Right With the Sixers

I would think the Joel injury changes the trade scenario somewhat. Had things continued to go in the wrong direction it was not impossible they could trade someone from the starting five (not Ben, though that rumor existed already too). The article above suggests they move either Harris or Horford (plus) for Chris Paul (if they could) and mentions trading Richardson too. But I would think it'd be very hard to let go of Horford now, plus you still want him against the Bucks and Celtics in the playoffs

Lots of talk in the Bay Area about a Warriors/76ers deal of D'Angelo Russell and the Warriors #1 pick [which is likely to be in the 2-4 range] for Simmons. Feeling from afar is that Simmons and Embiid are simply incompatible, especially with Horford clogging the middle and a natural pick and roll guy like Russell would flourish with Embiid and Horford.

Simmons wouldn't need to shoot 3's with the Warriors as they have Curry, Thompson and a couple of youngsters [Lee and Spellman] who are showing uncanny 3 point shooting prowess in this largely lost Warrior season.

I suspect that a 76ers initial reaction would be "no way" as Simmons is a very unique talent. However Russell is also 23, is showing that he can easily put 25-30 points a night on the board while being an excellent floor leader who admittedly isn't the defensive whiz that Simmons is. Still, that Top 4 pick and Russell would likely give the 6ers two outstanding young talents and better mesh with the 76er bigs.

Thoughts on this potential deal?

Tempting but I would say no deal. Russell is still one of the least efficient NBA players, still only shooting 43% in this his best season. Yes, he scores, but he does it by overshooting.

Simmons, on the other hand, is extremely efficient.

The other issue is that by trading Simmons and combining him with Curry (assuming he comes back) and other talent still on the the Warriors they would climb the standings and the pick loses a lot of value.

To me this is another case of a large city press once again making up rumors that benefit that team without much reasoning for the already good team.

bkeich...trade would not happen now, but at the end of the season A] after the 76ers see where the Warrior pick is [it could be #1] and B] after the 6ers see how they do in the playoffs. No way that deal happens now, Philadelphia is fully invested in Simmons, as well they should be. But there is a growing consensus among people who watch Philadelphia regularly that the Simmons/Embiid duo is not going to work and that at some point one of them will have to be moved.
