If the Phillies were a winning organization with depth and cap space the Trout fantasy could probably still come true eventually. (I'm sure on other boards people could be saying that about Harper.)

If the Phillies are back in a rebuild by 2023, I suspect Boras will be leaning on the Phillies good to get Harper out of town, either by way of a trade or negotiating in an opt-out.

Who knows. He seemed pretty serious about wanting to raise his family in one place. Of course if there's a long teardown after two more lost seasons, he might change his mind, but if that's the case the Phillies will also be dying to trade him (at best because he'll still have value, at worst because he won't be a great player by the time the Phillies are competitive again).

More likely this team will continue trying to rebuild on the fly, however ill-advised it might be as a sustainable long-term strategy.

John Middleton reminds me of Ed Snider. Heart is in the right place, willing to spend a lot of money. Not enough patience. I do think Middleton spends up to the luxury tax next year. And it's time to move on from Klentak. If they don't re-sign JT and go get a front line Wheeler type starter this team would be OK. Next year's bullpen can't be worse. It amazes me the minors can't even produce decent relievers.

Trevor Bauer might be the only really good starter out there. Do we really want him for 5 years?

I don't know. The Flyers at least had winning teams more often than they had losing teams with Snider in charge. What happened to the Flyers this century was that each time the Flyers got close (2004, 2010), Snider really started to push the envelope in turns of getting the right high-priced guys to put them over the top and, in the process, drove them into the ditch. Middleton has yet to oversee a winning team.

Don't disagree there, but I'm not sure that losing 3 years is Middelton's fault - 10 years, yes. He put his faith in Klentak. And the minor leagues are brutal, some of that is not Kentak's fault.

Interesting off-season ahead. I don't see the Phils rebuilding with two front line starters. But real change is needed.

Nola, Wheeler and Eflin is not a bad trio to build a rotation on
The pen - we all know this will have a brand new look in 21, hopefully Dominquez comes back at least
Who plays SS and 2B in 21?
Do they back up the Brinks truck for Realmuto?
Haseley, Moniak, Quinn, McCutchen should be 4th and 5th outfielders, meaning a LFer and CFer (Kingery?) is needed, too

The good news is there will be lots of 40-man space, but with this off season starting now, I expect a decision on Moniak to be made pretty soon.

Someone mentioned in the playoff chase thread how somewhat karmic it would have been if Kapler led and Smyly pitched the Giants into the Postseason today. That didn't come to pass. However, the Giants ownership has been aggressive and known to be liberal with the pursestrings. Remember they almost outbid us for Harper last year. You can't help but wonder if this year's postseason near miss might make them pressure Zahidi to forgo rebuilding and try to be all-in instead...and go hard after Bauer and maybe even Realmuto (while moving Posey to another position).

Unlike the Phillies I don't think going 28-30 will make the Giants think they are ready to contend. Though it would be funny if they did that and fell short and then Gabe got fired after two seasons again.

Yes, I don't see the Giants fooling themselves about the current roster based on some fluky years from some veterans in a short season. They're still running out the clock on the long-term deals for the core of the 2010-2014 glory days, and the vets added in the unsuccessful attempt to keep the glory days going. They're getting closer to the end though:
Bumgarner left last off-season
Samardzjia is gone this year
Posey, Cueto, Belt, and Crawford at the end of 2021 (assuming some options don't get picked up, which seems safe to assume)
Longoria at the end of 2022

The Giants seem unlikely to have interest in Realmuto given that their top prospect is catcher Joey Bart. Bart struggled in limited time in MLB in 2020, but he really should have been in AAA this season, so I don't expect the Giants to change their evaluation of him at this point.

The giants top position player prospect is a catcher, Joey Bart. They brought him up this year and though he wasn't great (69 OPS+) hes only 23.

I like this. And I am happy to see Mike Schmidt having vocally supported the move.

I think I like the idea of putting Frank Robinson's name on there, as an MVP in both leagues.
