Yep, a different philosophical model, although teams do keep their ticket/food/parking/local radio(?) receipts and there's a significant difference between the price of a Giant's season ticket (plus seat license) and the price of a Tampa Bay ticket. My problem is calling the NFL model "pure" and the MLB model "corrupt". And there are "quality incentive" issues in the NFL that come from revenue sharing. We talk about them in the football threads, though! (Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, Cleveland)

NFL can't be compared as the source of TV revenue is so different and so much larger. Sixteen games versus 162 means source of revenue is going to be big because of competition between big networks. Weirdly Comcast who exclusively carried Phillies, Sixers, and flyers now owns NBC. But you know what I'm saying. I just think it's impossible to restructure the MLB 162 games. However, with broadcasting through the internet and other internet money, MLB has been able to give small markets more. (Like everyone else I'm annoyed St. Louis is considered a small market.

There's some thought that MLB will eventually pool revenue if and when the local (and even the national) TV deals dry up. Then it would all just be one TV deal, through MLB AM (which is now owned mostly by Disney). But that could be a very long ways away. Arguably the cord-cutter trend will only make sports more attractive to the cable companies that own regional networks and buy a lot of the local TV rights.

Baseball once had both a stronger reserve clause, and full free agency for amateurs, with less revenues sharing than exists today. Of course the Yankees almost always won and most teams had zilch chance. You won the league pennant or you went home.
