This smells like the Phillies drafts of old where they targeted guys and picked them regardless of whoever else may have been available.
With the baseball draft there is also the “what do they want” factor. You don’t always just take best available in a slot, if you did you wouldn’t be able to sign them all probably. It is a value versus your remaining estimated pool.
I wonder if they already didn’t have a number with Nori that allowed them to go after guys later and maybe “steal” a HS player in rounds 11-13.
I do think we probably have a deal with a top 200 HS guy in the 11th round tomorrow. We’ll know by 2:40pm
Hope it's a pitcher.

Uh. This is a draft thread.....
In the 11th Round of the 2024 MLB Draft, the Philadelphia Phillies interrupt this important discussion about the irrelevance of the draft and select:
Titan Hayes, RHP, Austin Peay University, Sr.
No big deals this year for us.
Bummer. Seems like they should have had money left. I guess they think the early HS guys will be pricy
wow!! this has the makings of a real poor draft. We will eventually see.
In the 12th Round of the 2024 MLB Draft the Philadelphia Phillies select:
A.J. Wilson, LHP, UNC Charlotte, Grad Student
Double Wow!!
The first couple of picks are usually exciting. It is just hard to think we have to go over slot on too many of the previous picks including our first two. I guess there are more older college players than normal out there because many got that extra covid year of eligibility, but most of those are of the non drafted free agent variety.
Hayes seems to have a biggish arm...getting up to 97
I've lost interest.
And there is no Phillies game today. And there is plenty of discussion on the Phillies season and daily game day threads. This is a special occasion.
Here is Matt's running day 3 thread. At least Hayes is a redshirt junior with a big arm.
And the day 2 summary.
I know Matt doesn't need the promotion, but we appreciate his thoughts (and research) on all these picks.
A grad student in the 12th round? Yikes!
At this rate, we'll be taking a team manager in the 13th and the Study Hall proctor in the 14th. How the heck did we not save any money with a 30 pick reach in the first round and only one other HS player taken in the first 10 rounds?
I think we are definitely seeing the effect of NIL money on signing high school picks. This was supposedly a mediocre high school class to begin with, but I think we are seeing players that cannot get a $500K bonus go to college. Remember if they can get $150K-$200K of NIL money for 3 years its a better deal because supposedly they are getting an education too in the bargain.
I would not be surprised if our 2 HS picks to begin the draft are our only HS picks.
