He had a bad year in 2019 but at some point he just got replaced by Austin Riley and the playing time was not a significant sample. He has been quite good in AAA though. 1221 OPS in limited time in 2019 but 958 in a large sample in 2021.

I think in a larger sample he probably settles into something more like a 750 OPS major league hitter. Pair that with plus defense at 3B (he is probably not good enough at SS to be the primary middle infield reserve) and you have a backup plan for Bohm failing that is a whole lot better than Ronald Torreyes and Freddy Galvis.

Camargo is a very good under-the-radar signing. He's been a beast in AAA and has had some MLB success. Riley just stole his job. This is a good gamble, a 27-year-old who has proven it in AAA who seems like he only needs an opportunity. Plays good 3B defense, and can stand-in at 2B and SS for a game or two without embarrassing himself.

I think Bohm will be given every opportunity to win the 3B job, but if he doesn't then both AAA and LF are options. LF only if we do not adequately address that position in the offseason. The Phillies want Bohm to be their third baseman. They are a better team if that happens. They just can't repeat the disaster of 2021 however.

Nothing against Johan, but why did we punt Torreyes who had several years of cheap control? Why are we shelling out $20 million at the top end of the roster just to nickel and dime the depth guys?

Torreyes is easily replaceable. 632 OPS last year exposed his lack of offense. He is not as good as Camargo. Middle infield defense-only players are easily acquired, and Maton internally is probably better than Torreyes anyway. Kingery too if you just considered him as a middle infield reserve.

Torreyes was never worth a roster spot, you could still bring him back on a minor league deal - a a major league deal for that matter - if you want him to be the primary back-up SS. Freddy would also be cheaper than he was last year.

"Primary back-up" may be a misnomer here too. The one thing that won't happen, IMO, is Didi as starting SS and a mere bench back-up SS. Of course they could still end up going big on SS in free agency, or Stott could make his play for the job. But as things currently stand, if Didi is our SS, the other SS needs to be better than Galvis or Torreyes or Maton. If Torreyes could actually put up an .800 OPS you could probably put him out there too.

Camargo is a decent upside play and if that minor league bat shows up in the majors he'll free up other guys to DH more too. And if he works out he's not a free agent until 2025, in that sense it's a huge addition, as well as insurance/flexibility regarding Bohm.

Camargo had a good ML season in 2018, a bad season in 2019, a really good minor league season in 2021, inflated by a .361 BABIP. So I guess he's worth a gamble to find out if he's a AAAA player or a ML player who just needed a couple years to mature.

When he's played well, he has a BB% close to 10%, when he's struggling, it falls to 5-6%, so it may be a mental thing, he's prone to pressing and chasing pitches. Maturity may resolve that, or not.

He's also had some "luck" issues, his good season, BABIP .315, his two offseasons following that good year, around .255.

I am not saying Camargo is great. He is cheap though. And better than Torreyes so all in all it is a good signing. Like you I doubt whether that good 2018 season was more than a first time around the league thing.

Mentioned it in another thread but worth repeating for those of us who grew to love the Phillies in the early 60's. The Veterans Committee is voting on HOF inductees today and Dick Allen has a very decent chance of finally getting in. For those of us who saw him play in the 60's in his first stint with the Phillies, there were few players better than Allen. Still say he was the best player I ever saw on a baseball diamond.

Unfortunately he isn't with us to celebrate if he does get in as he died in the past year and won't get to witness the vote first hand.

When I saw there were three posts here I thought maybe there was at least some new gossip or speculation from somewhere.)

Well. we won't have to discuss it anymore here as Allen didn't make it. Gil Hodges, Jim Kaat, Minnie Minoso, and Tony Oliva were selected by the Golden Era Committee.

That really does stink. I thought it was sad he died before he could see it happen and now it's just sad that it still won't. At least he was able to enjoy what the Phillies did for him.
