Agreed, although Pujols might be on his way to being a part-time player in 2019. He put up a .700 OPS last season -- not what you want from a 1B/DH.

Side note: Pujols is making an eye-watering amount of $ and he's still on the books through 2021. Yowza!

Yeah Pujols just got platooned. I assume that Ohtani, even as a DH, won't be overused, as he'll be rehabbing his pitching too.

That is a really strange move. They seem to be very similar players, Carlos had a down year in 2018 but Encarnacion is older.
Basically trading a bit of OBP for a little extra pop.
Encarnacion is earning a little more (20M vs 17.5) and has a 5M buyout for the 2020 season while Santanas contract is guaranteed for 2020 but comes with a 500k buyout for 2021.

I honestly don't understand why either team makes this move. Neither gets much better or saves much money. I guess you can say Cleveland just really likes Carlos and is happy to have him back and Jerry Dipoto just likes making trades.

More flexibility for Mariners to flip a veteran at trade deadline and get something for him. Encarnacion only has 1 year left on the contract so Mariners also save about $15M it total commitment

I’ve been listening to Power Alley and they mentioned Santana’s fielding as a big factor for the Indians in making this deal. Evidently Santana still had his house in the Cleveland area.

I heard on Power Alley that the Mariners send $5 million to the Rays and the Rays send $6 million to the Indians.

It could be wrong but MLBTR says Seattle is sending $5 million to Tampa and $6 million to Cleveland. M's also get competive balance pick. In any case, the Indians get an extra year of a player they like - or they can trade him again - instead of whatever Encarnacion might have gotten at the deadline (he wasn't gonna get a QO presumably).
