I saw that Quinn didn't play and immediately came to the conclusion that one of two things happened...1] he got hurt again or 2] he is joining the big club in Cincinnati. Hope its #2.

He could just have a day off in an 11am game after a night game when he's still working his way back. That said, surely he is heading to Ohio over Cozens. Only other possibility is a trade. But it seems like they are waiting until Friday and might go with the short bench again tomorrow. They optioned Anderson already but that would just be for Suarez.

zambonir...hope Quinn is OK, he could offer so much to the big club. One other thing I noticed at Reading. Hernandez caught a fly ball to end the 8th and was then replaced defensively in the ninth. Does anyone know if he got hurt catching the fly ball [diving, running into the fence?] He, Pujols and Grullon are 3 guys who have really helped themselves prospect wise this year and I would like all 3 to finish the season strong and healthy.

If this is true, "Brown, whose repertoire features a (usually) 92-94 MPH fastball, a curve ball and a change up," then our development staff has struck again, taking a 88-90 FB to 92-94 within a year or so.

No indication that is true. The report from GCL was more 89-91. All young pitchers (especially tall ones) tend to pick up velocity. It is no giant victory for the development staff other than a reminder of why it is good to invest in a few projectable pitchers every year (and spend some money in the draft to get them).

I’m not going to anoint him as the next big thing, but it is pretty impressive to get that kind of improvement and performance from an 18 year old 32nd round pick. Interesting thing they have going on there in Long Island.

Hard to believe but a year later, MacKenzie Mills wins his first game as a member of the Phillies organization. He came in a trade from Washington last July with a gaudy 12-2 record and some promise of being a decent prospect. Finally, he won his first game yesterday though he has been pitching well for a month now.

There is nothing this development staff can do that would be to their credit...it seems that when good players end up here it's just all some good luck and zero skill.

Cornelius Randolph has been pretty good over the last month but really good the last couple of weeks...slash line over the last month.

If he can be a consistent .950 OPS, that will certainly be sufficient. The .761 OPS is clearly inadequate. He is limited to corner OF/1b and isn't a plus defender at any position, so his bat will have to be exceptional for him to make it. Let's hope that he has turned a corner, rather than this simply being a brief hot streak.

The development staff has done an exceptionally good job with projectable skinny pitchers. Our medical staff hasn't always been their most effective friend.

The comment was in response to a comment that suggested our development staff magically added 4-6 mph to a pitcher from a poster who often criticizes the importance of signing HS pitchers. I am all for signing projectable HS pitchers. And spending to our international pool max to do the same with international projectable pitchers. But I also have a realistic view that what the Phillies do is not magic. It is scouting paired with development. There is not lots of evidence we are better at development than anyone else. We tend to do better when we devote the resources into signing better players.

New developments like 2 GCL teams are an improvement. Spending to the max in the draft (and doing more $100K bonuses rather than $5K bonuses to college seniors is also a little bit of an improvement. It is not magic though. It is money and other resources that do this. And we also should not think that whatever the Phillies is doing is special. I have no idea if our development people now are better than 5 or 10 years ago. They are getting more money (and thus better players). But are we better at actual development? No clue on that.

We have a nice track record of finding low cost LA pitchers in recent years, SD, Ramos, Suarez, Kilome, E Garcia, S Sanchez, Medina, Llovera.
We also have done a nice job of finding pitching talent in trades, Pivetta, Eflin, Velasquez, Eickhoff, Lively, Arano, De Los Santos, etc.
We're also having better success at the later part of the draft finding pitchers.

I think this has been a multi-pronged development, we had good LA scouting that was income constrained, we may have better pro scouting than we thought, but I have to credit player development the last few years.

It's not like our young pitching is a bunch of high first round/big LA bonus guys, in fact, our top draft picks have been our biggest pitching failures:
