I think what we're seeing is the strategy you pushed for and the phillies employed doesn't work. They tried a bunch of young arms instead of adding veterans and this is the net result. A team with an ace and a bunch of AAAA arms behind him.

I agree, but it's not that the strategy doesn't ever work, it's that it didn't work for the Phils this time. It was a feasible choice, they went in that direction, and they were wrong. I think this is what the "organizations win championships" phrase means. We made a lot of bad choices in overall strategy, drafting, and professional player acquisition that have led to the current malaise. At some point somebody has to pay the price for those decisions...who picked Hunter, Nicasio, Neshek part 2, and Robertson? How can you be so wrong all the time if it doesn't reflect an organizational defect? Who decided not to overpay for Corbin? That seems like a mistake at this point. Who decided not to sign Keuchel? Who is coaching the hitters in a way that seems like their production is uniformly down? Who hired those coaches? Who thought Velasquez, Pivetta, and Eflin were more than pitchers who should be competing to be #5 starters? Etc.

I don't have faith that good players can continue to be good players when added to this team.

They should not sell. You just can't do that within a game or two of a playoff spot.

But they also should not buy with real prospects. A combination of being able to add $15 million in salary and 3rd tier prospects should be all they can risk. If they make the playoffs it is because their young starters actually pitch well or some players like Harper and Hoskins start hitting. They do have the talent to win 86 games. They just don't have the talent to win 92 and the division.

I would also think about making Haseley the starting CF and Kingery the starting 3B (assuming Segura is not hurt). Franco is just not helping the team since his defense is mediocre even if he is hitting.

Nothing to really do about the bullpen other than getting some veterans in on the cheap.

Why the two threads?

(Ah I see Andy mentioned already).

The fact that they have no one to sell makes it easy to not sell. Bruce is worth keeping. They can't really spare any relievers. If someone wants Franco, Williams or even Hernandez, and it makes sense sure, why not? None of those things are white flags (though you probably can't trade both Franco and Hernandez).

They'll get someone controllable and maybe a spare part for the rotation. Maybe VV goes back to the pen if so.

Why the two threads?

Well... I could merge the two threads...but...this board would not handle that particularly well, in my experience; time sequences get messed up. I'll experiment...

OK - I moved posts from people who don't appear to have found the other thread since the inadvertant splt (and also any posts which were ID'ed as specific replies to those posts). They all appended to the end of the other thread (dated as of the time I moved them), but it doesn't appear that it made things too awful disjointed. It's a speculation thread anyway - by definition kinda all over the place!
