Who would you suggest? Pitching is at a premium. Over the next 4 days.. there are 18 scheduled starters with ERAs above 5. And even the Rays have an undecided for Sunday.

League average ERA is now 4.21 so there's probably a lot more than 18! (Last year it was 3.90.)

Personally I think the bullpen games are working no better or worse than anything else. They have losses of 4-3 (Dbacks), 11-4 (Braves, in what was technically Covey's only start), a 4-2 win (Nats), a skipped start and a 9-8 loss (Dbacks). They were 1-7 with Falter. It's probably not helping the bullpen though, i.e.:

Since June 1, the Phillies bullpen has pitched to a 5.27 ERA. Over that span, their starters have pitched to a 3.09 ERA.

Matthew Boyd or Michael Lorenzen of the Tigers off the top of my head.

I would say Boyd's not necessarily an upgrade and yet, he'd probably cost something. Lorenzen probably will cost more than Thor did because the Phillies picked up all of Thor's high salary.

I reckon the Phillies are going to trade Muzziotti or Rojas if not one of the three pitchers but will it be for a starting pitcher or a bat? Either way it's unlikely to happen before the All-Star break.

2 of the 3 next bullpen games should be against the A's and Nats too. Plus the Mets.

Because they were three runs ahead, and it's a 162 game season and they want to preserve their best arms for higher risk situations would be my guess.

While this is also true a three-run lead is not a six-run lead. But they presumably didn't want to use Alvarado last night and then were forced to later. But also the truth is Seranthony is still one of our two best relievers (or at least, there's no difference between #2 and #3). Just not one of the two hottest ones. But people were saying the same thing about Kimbrel a month ago.

Gotta take care of business in Oakland. Winning the series should be a minimum expectation.

We're stuck with him, of course, and he's young enough to improve, but I am feeling like Brandon Marsh has been a black hole in the lineup for a long time now. He has one home run since April and his OPS since April is in the mid-500s. He is really the worst hitter in the lineup (except when Harrison or Guthrie plays).

And I am not at all sold on his defense (though compared to the guys on either side of him, he's Garry Maddox).

As I said, we're stuck with him, and maybe he will improve eventually. But I'd bat him ninth for now, and I'd sit him against lefties.

We'll get Pache back soon to be Marsh's platoon partner. They probably don't see Guthrie as good enough to merit more than a start a week. I just wish there was a way to work Cave or Muzziotti in and we probably need Harper at 1B to do that.

Meanwhile Rojas keeps improving in AA, think he'll get promoted at some point this summer - if he keeps it up he'll get a shot at CF at some point next season.

Next season Pache, Muzzioti, Marsh and Rojas in LF & CF, Schwarber to DH, Harper at 1B.
Might actually field a good defensive team.
With pitching hard to find, putting a good defense together is like "hamburger helper" for the rotation.

that's correct AF. I would not give up Rojas in a trade just yet unless your getting a Pablo Lopez, Flaherty, Luis Garcia Trevor Rogers etc. I still think he is going to be special.

I have no problem for every fifth start being a bullpen game. The concept is sound when you don't have a good option for a conventional starter - no one faces anyone twice in the lineup. Heck, I'd be inclined to trade for a quality opener (a reliever who can go up to three innings) than a mediocre "fifth starter".

Trevor Rogers was just transferred to the 60-day IL. Still might be worth picking up with an eye to eating innings in September.

Nelson just threw 62 pitches in Lehigh, they're stretching him out for the 5th starter role - probably be happy if they can get 4-5 innings out of him.

And the 4 innings he threw last night were run-less with 4 Ks. His best rehab outing by far. I'd expect him to post a decent (4.5-ish) ERA in the majors as a fifth starter if he's healthy and limited to about 80 pitches.

I guess Soto and Seranthony are close, but at this point I still feel better with Seranthony on the mound. Soto has improved recently, which is a good sign.
