This does raise an interesting question.... If the hitting coach was let go, what about the pitching coaching. They have been even worse.
Pitchers:
Nola is having his worst of the last 3 seasons. We expected him to at least be in discussion of the Cy Young again, he has been only average.
Arrieta - Injury but he was awful before the injury too.
Velasquez, Pivetta, Eickoff and Eflin - All failures as starters this year. We expected at least 1 of them to hold on to a spot, hopefully 2-3. Instead they are all failing as starters.
There are a ton of injuries in the bullpen, but the guys that arent hurt have had bad seasons.
Neris - as usual up and down, but in general one of his worst seasons (last year was worse)
etc.
When you look down the list of the pitchers, who is doing well? Smyly has a couple starts, every other pitcher has mediocre stats. Alvarez, Nola, Hammer, Neris and Morgan are the only pitchers with an ERA under 4.00. No one has an ERA under 3.00.
The team is 13th in ERA in the NL (out of 15).
So if you also say that the pitching has been below expectation (even compensating for injuries), well, if hitting isnt good and pitching isnt good, maybe it is time to look at the Manager and wonder if he is doing well.
